Split into two sections by the Marmara Sea and the Dardanelle and Bosphorus Straits, Turkey bridges Europe and Asia, stretching from the Balkans to the Caucasus and the Middle East and boasts a wide range of landscapes and climates.

European Turkey shares borders with Greece and Bulgaria, while 1500km to the east, Asian Turkey shares borders with Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq and Syria. Turkey's possessions in the Aegean are confined to two small, inhabited islands close to the Dardanelle Straits and a handful of uninhabited islets strung along the coast.
